What’s your availability? Volunteer shifts at the shelter on weekdays are more independent – you may only see a couple of other volunteers, depending on what time you are there. If you’re looking for a quieter experience with the cats, this is for you. Volunteer shifts on weekends are a team environment, typically with multiple volunteers at the shelter at the same time since all of the cleaning/feeding needs to be completed by noon, before Open House. This is for you if you’re interested in a more social atmosphere around the cats. Please check the days and times you are available:

Cleaning

This is one of the most important volunteering tasks and requires a 2-3 hour weekly commitment. This role involves checking/changing bedding, scooping/cleaning litter trays, wiping shelves, sweeping/mopping and refreshing food and water. And of course you can pet and cuddle the cats too!

Trapping

Working with our experienced trappers, this task involves setting and checking humane live traps to catch stray or feral cats in need of our support, and then bringing them to the shelter.

Driving cats to/from medical care

Every cat coming into the shelter sees a vet, as does any other cat needing medical care, so we always need drivers able to drive between the shelter and Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Coquitlam.

Grooming/nail trimming

This task helps our cats feel more comfortable - matts and ingrown nails hurt, so if you have grooming skills, or would like to learn, please check this box

Cat Whispering Support

Katie’s Place is a safe haven for every cat for as long as they need it, no matter how behaviourally challenged it may be. We need volunteers to work in collaboration with our existing cat whisperers to befriend and socialize every cat to the point where they are ready for a forever home, no matter how long it takes.

Medicating

If you are a vet tech, nurse, or have a special interest in this area, this may be the task for you.

Building and grounds maintenance

If you have plumbing, carpentry, electrical, roofing, grounds or building experience, and can donate some time to help maintain or repair the shelter, we’d love to hear from you.

Fundraising

Are you a skilled crafter? We are looking for people who sew, knit, crochet, make ceramics, paper/wood crafts etc. who would be able to contribute high quality items to our quarterly fundraising curated craft fairs.

Short-term fostering

We need skilled and experienced people to provide a safe, quiet space and medical care for our cats in crisis, those recovering from surgery, or those too frail for shelter life. This can be a considerable undertaking, for which we provide support and training where indicated.

WAIVER: I, the undersigned, agree to assume all risk of loss or injury, including death, to myself or damage to my property while on Katie’s Place’s premises and elsewhere while participating in a Katie’s Place volunteer program, and hereby release and waive any right of action against Katie’s Place, its heirs, assigns, agents or volunteers for any such loss of injury. I acknowledge that the animals I may be working with are not trained and that they can be unpredictable or dangerous. I also acknowledge that Katie’s Place strongly recommends I keep my tetanus immunizations current, and consult my physician about this and any other concerns relating to working with animals. I hereby waive for my personal representative and dependents all such claims or rights of action aforementioned that the undersigned or my personal representative and dependents may have against Katie’s Place, its heirs, assigns, agents or volunteers.
