What is our adoption process?
So, you are thinking of adding a feline friend to your family? What can you expect during this exciting process? We want to set you up for success – so here is what you should know:
The best place to start is by filling in our Adoption Application form. It gives us an idea of who you are, what pet experience you have, what kind of cat you are looking for, what your home environment is etc. Please take time to provide as much information as possible and then click send!
When we receive your application, it is reviewed by our Adoptions Team; we use the information you provide to work out whether we have any cats that might be a good fit.
Next, come see who we have! We have only a few of our cats posted on Petfinder, and various cats get posted on our Instagram page, so the best way to know what selection we have available for adoption is to come and visit us at the shelter. We have Open House every Saturday and Sunday from noon -2pm.
When you come to the shelter, an Adoption Team Member will tour you through the shelter, introduce you to cats who may be suitable, and support in creating a shortlist of possible matches. We will have a discussion about the history and needs of the cat, specifics on food and vet care, as well as answer any questions you may have. Before you leave, you let us know who your choices are, and we take that information to the Team for further discussion.
We do not do same day adoptions. The first visit to Katie’s Place is a meet ‘n greet only. You get some time to go home, review your experience and consider which cat you may want to move forward with, and if approved, get your home ready for their arrival.
Upon approval, you and the Adoption Team will finalize details for the adoption to proceed at the next visit. Then is a good time to read our “Helpful Tips for a Smooth Adoption” document which details the things to consider to prepare your home, and reminders for the day of adoption.
